It's a Sunshine Day!

I can hear the soft sound of John Denver – “Sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy.”

My friends, to borrow the phrase spoken by the father of modern conservatism himself – Ronald Reagan – “It’s morning in America.”

As our long time allies – the French – had prominently displayed in their newspapers on Wednesday morning, “The long American nightmare is over.”

Despite the claims of mandate made by this president in 2002 and 2004, America has spoken with a level of authority rarely provided in elections these days. Washington is now hearing the call.

What exactly has America said? Many are debating that now. To me, it seems pretty clear.

Americans went to the polls in solid numbers on Tuesday and said, “ENOUGH!!!”

Enough of the corruption. Enough of the lavish spending. Enough of the incompetence.

The result is a solid Democratic majority in the Congress – the House and the Senate. But now the Democrats have a heavy responsibility. They must heed the call of the electorate and honor the mandate they have been given. This war on terrorism must be managed competently and our troops must come home – two things that are not mutually exclusive. Spending must be reigned in and our elected officials must stop lining their own pockets (while they’re at it – get their hands out of the pockets of underage pages.) Healthcare must be dealt with and stem cell research must be funded.

Democrats must do these things while conducting proper oversight, without diving into petty obstruction. For if they do, a new era of American progress at home and leadership abroad is upon us.

It’s morning in America. Now, grab your cup of coffee and let’s get to work!
